Saint-Gobain Glass Logistics, the logistics subsidiary of flat glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain Glass, relies on APIs and the Map & Guide software solution from publisher PTV Logistics to precisely control the costs and distances of its daily transport.

Each year, Saint-Gobain Glass Logistics manages 65,000 transport orders for its Saint-Gobain Glass customers, who specialize in the manufacture of flat glass for the automotive and construction sectors. Transporting this material requires specific conditions, as Stéphane Dauvé, CEO of Saint-Gobain Glass Logistics, points out: "On leaving our 12 production plants in Europe, flat glass is transported on 40-tonne heavy goods vehicles, equipped with Inloader trailers specially designed to transport the glass on the edge. The challenge is to precisely calculate the distances and costs of journeys to delivery and repositioning locations throughout Europe in order to control our costs and invoicing. »

An estimated gain of 10% on the cost per kilometer

To meet this challenge, Saint-Gobain Glass Logistics uses three PTV Logistics APIs: xRoute for calculating routes, xLocate for geocoding addresses, and xMap for displaying maps. These tools are integrated into its TMS software dedicated to global transport management. They allow precise calculations to be made by taking into account numerous criteria such as the kilometers traveled empty or loaded, the configuration of the vehicles (number of axles, length, etc.), or the details of toll costs throughout Europe, updated regularly and dynamically. Thanks to this data, Saint-Gobain Glass Logistic is able to self-invoice its service providers while billing its customers as accurately as possible.

Thanks to PTV APIs, Saint-Gobain Glass Logistics estimates an average gain of up to 10% on the cost per kilometer depending on the countries crossed. To respond to one-off requests for quotes on journeys not included in its usual services, the broker also uses, in addition to its TMS, the PTV Map & Guide heavy goods vehicle route calculation software, which allows it to run simulations according to the same transport constraints. "Without PTV Map & Guide, our quotes would certainly be less accurate," says Stéphane Dauvé, who has been selected to be a beta tester for the new version of the software that will be released soon.
