The Société des Transports Biocoop (STB), transport division of the Biocoop organic store network in France, has chosen the Eco-motor-free technologyDrive and Carrier Transicold’s Syberia 11 refrigeration unit to reduce the environmental impact of its tractor-trailer deliveries. Carrier Transicold is part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), a global leader in smart climate and energy solutions.

Biocoop Transport Company is continuing the energy transition of its fleet of vehicles. After having trained its drivers in the best practices of eco-driving, then optimized its supply and distribution schemes to reduce the number of kilometers driven, the STB made the choice to convert its fleet of vehicles, ensuring the distribution in urban areas of the brand’s stores in France, with biogas energy.

“In 2014, we conducted an in-depth study of eco-responsible fuel offerings as an alternative to diesel,” says Ouadie Benaissa, Director of Société des Transports Biocoop. “ Following this, we decided to gradually convert our 65 vehicles to biogas. This natural fuel, produced by fermentation of organic matter, was the most developed energy source on the market at the time. This strategic choice reflects our desire to reduce the environmental impact of our deliveries.” Today, 80% of the carriers and 60% of the brand’s tractors use biofuel, with a goal of 100% by 2025.

For the refrigeration units of its carriers, which ensure a constant temperature of 3°C inside the body, Biocoop chose the Carrier Transicold Eco-Drive module. Using a hydraulic pump connected to the PTO of the truck, the Carrier Eco-Drive module recovers the kinetic energy produced by the engine, which is decarbonized thanks to biogas, and converts it into electricity to power the manufacturer’s Syberia 11 refrigeration unit. The combination of Eco-Drive hydroelectric technology with the Syberia 11 refrigeration unit eliminates the use of the refrigeration unit’s thermal engine. This significantly reduces pollutant emissions, maintenance costs and noise levels. In 2022, Biocoop reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 4.3% in grams per kilometre travelled. A further 4.5% reduction is expected by the end of 2023.

“Carrier Transicold’s solution, the main supplier of our fleet, is perfectly in line with our ambitions to reduce CO2 emissions. Carrier is at the forefront of environmental issues and constantly offers us new innovative refrigeration solutions. In addition, these technologies are very reliable on the ground. Carrier is a true trusted partner,” stresses Ouadie Benaissa.

Eco-Drive technology and Syberia 11 units are sustainable cold chain solutions that contribute to Carrier’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) goal of helping customers avoid more than 1 gigatonne of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
